Sunset Rubdown Inspire Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter Character
Pitchfork &bull Feb 25, 2010
In Tim Burton's forthcoming 3D CGI-dipped take on Alice in Wonderland, Johnny Depp plays the Mad Hatter, looking like some sort of deranged mime in the trailer. And according to Depp, his version of the character got help from an unlikely place: the music of the unhinged Canadian indie-psych band Sunset Rubdown. Depp dropped this particular bombshell in an interview with CBS News' "Early Show" (via the Tripwire): "I get musical inspiration for the characters. Like for example, there was a band-- actually, Terry Gilliam turned… Full Story »

New Release: We Have Band: WHB
Pitchfork &bull Feb 25, 2010
When Massive Attack last toured North America, a typical bit of stage patter from crew leader 3D went like this: "Everyone OK out there? A Massive Attack live show isn't exactly the party of the century. But if you're a fan of the Bristol trip-hop pioneers' dread-inducing creep-groove, you owe it to yourself to hear it in a big room with big speakers and no small amount of bass. The last time I saw them, collaborators like reggae vet Horace Andy and Cocteau Twin Elizabeth Fraser made guest appearances, so maybe you'll… Full Story »

Watch the New Sunset Rubdown Video
Pitchfork &bull Feb 25, 2010
You know a video is long when it includes multiple dream sequences. The new video for Sunset Rubdown's "Dragon's Lair", from writer/producer/director Throne Boogie, runs nearly 11 minutes and doesn't feature any actual dragons. Instead, it consists mostly of prettily shot footage of an adorable little kid running through wintery meadows and riding a horse. But there are also a couple of parts featuring a witch-looking lady in the sky. You figure it out. Last year, Rising Brooklyn indie crew Suckers released their self-titled debut EP. And now, as they… Full Story »

Suckers Sign to Frenchkiss
Pitchfork &bull Feb 25, 2010
Last year, Rising Brooklyn indie crew Suckers released their self-titled debut EP. And now, as they get ready to drop their first full-length, they've joined fellow Rising bands the Antlers and Local Natives over on the Brooklyn label Frenchkiss, which is quickly amassing one of the most loaded rosters in all of indiedom. At the moment, Suckers are mastering their debut album. In March, they'll head out on the road with Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson and Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers. The trek will take the band deep into the U.S. and include a whole mess of… Full Story »

Phosphorescent Announce New Album
Pitchfork &bull Feb 25, 2010
Last year, Matthew Houck's Brooklyn-based indie folk project Phosphorescent released To Willie, a collection of Willie Nelson covers, but it's been a good three years since we've heard an album of new material from Houck. On May 11, we'll get the follow-up to 2007's Pride, when Dead Oceans releases Here's to Taking It Easy, the new Phosphorescent album. In the past, Houck's played every instrument on Phosphorescent records, but this is a full-band deal, featuring the entire six-piece touring ensemble. The band recorded the LP by… Full Story »

New Release: To Rococo Rot: Speculation
Pitchfork &bull Feb 25, 2010
Thom Yorke's otherband-- you know, the one with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, Beck/R.E.M. drummer Joey Waronker, percussionist/multi-instrumentalist Mauro Refosco, and Flea-- now has a name: Atoms for Peace. The news comes straight from Thom himself via Radiohead's Dead Air Space blog. And, along with a previously announced set at this year's Coachella, the band is plotting a two-week, eight-date tour of some major U.S. cities this April. The last time the verbose, conceptually silly Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco embarked on a tour with a nutso… Full Story »

Local Natives: Gorilla Manor
Paste Magazine &bull Feb 25, 2010
In recent years, West Coast rock has become hazier (No Age), noisier (HEALTH) and woodsier (Fleet Foxes) compared to the East Coasts more melodic (Grizzly Bear), cosmopolitan (Dirty Projectors) and experimental (Animal Collective) style. And with their much-anticipated full-length debut,… Full Story »

The Walkmen's Frontman Hamilton Leithauser Talks New Album
Pitchfork &bull Feb 24, 2010
Me. The album doesn't have a title yet, and the band is still figuring out which songs will make the cut, so nobody quite knows what shape the LP will take. Hamilton Leithauser: I don't know yet because it's not done. I'm not 100 percent sure what's going to be on it; we've written so many songs. Me, but we ended up basically using like 90 percent of them on the record because we wanted it to be a long record. But this time, I think we recorded 22 songs or something like that. There's talk of doing a 20-song… Full Story »

You Just Have To Run
Gorilla vs. Bear &bull Feb 24, 2010
Here's the b-side from Velvet Davenport's new 7", which finds the Minneapolis crew collaborating with latest 4AD signee Ariel Pink. "Run" is a sunny little '60s-leaning psych-pop gem that nicely complements the much-blogged A-side. Our only complaint is that, at… Full Story »
